Google launched last year its free webmail service in beta version called Google Mail or otherwise known as Gmail. This free service of google has been a big hit. Gmail has gained so many followers that in many instances google accounts were even sold online.

After the launching of the Gmail service, Google announced shortly a simple and yet useful add on of Gmail called Gmail Notifier. It gives another reason for Gmail users to stick with their respective Gmail accounts.

The Gmail Notifier is a light downloadable Windows application tasked to monitor new messages sent to your Gmail account. It displays an icon in your system and alerts you if you have unread Gmail messages. Right in your icon task bar, pop up windows appear to inform you of new mails with essential information such as the sender, the subject and snippet from your mails' contents.

The advantage of having a Gmail Notifier is that you do not need to open your browser to check whether you have new Gmail messages or not. You can go directly to your Gmail inbox from Gmail Notifier which automatically checks for new messages every two minutes and displays snippets of text from up to 30 unread messages.

With Gmail Notifier, you can also select and activate your desired audio when you have a new mail. Moreover, you can configure Gmail as your default-email application.

Gmail Notifier alert system is good since it does not affect other open windows. Its current version however is not multi platform as it only supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, or a more recent version of Windows.

Its usefulness can be enhanced if it has a set of facilities that can filter mails to be displayed and ready file maintenance from the pop up so that files can be readily discarded or archived. A version for Non Windows users should also be made available.
